We are currently seeking an experienced and dedicated Abattoir Supervisor to join our team at Westerleigh.

This is a vital role within our operation, ensuring that all slaughtering processes are carried out efficiently, safely and in compliance with animal welfare and food safety regulations.

Job Title - Abattoir Supervisor

Location - Westerleigh

Salary - Competitive

Working Hours - 40 hours per week - Monday to Friday

Key Responsibilities - 

  • Overseeing the daily running over the Abattoir department
  • Report and resolve machine issues quickly, advising the Engineering Department of work requirements
  • Ensure product is produced within specification
  • Liaise with Primal Cut Supervisor and Abattoir and Primal Cut Manager regarding any issues that may affect product flow
  • Assist with any audits that are carried out in the department – e.g. customer visits
  • Identify and make provision for any on-line training where required
  • Ensure that all livestock is handled in a humane manner during unloading, whilst held in the lairage and up to the point of sticking and that at all times the welfare of the animal is paramount
  • Ensure that all slaughter and dressing operations are carried out in accordance with E.E.C. legislation and that the working practices contained therein are observed at all times
  • Maintain discipline, including managing levels of absenteeism, amongst the team at all times in accordance with Company policy
  • Ensure that any staff performance issues are dealt with using the Company policy
  • Ensure all Company hygiene standards and policies are adhered to in areas specified above
  • Ensure all staff adhere to Company health and safety policies and notices – e.g. wearing of PPE, machines are correctly operated
  • Lead by example
  • The job holder will have signed the Westerleigh Quality and Food Safety Contract which will be an appendix to this role profile. This will be reviewed and signed annually

You Will Need 

  • Full competent knowledge of the department and relevant regulations applicable from both internal and external sources
  • Experience of working within a food manufacturer and in a fast-past environment
  • Experience in team leadership
  • Knowledge of products, processes and procedures within relevant area
  • Commercially aware with some understanding of unit costs/yields
  • Knowledge of all relevant H&S procedures and requirements
